Current Clinical Use

Clinical trial participant using the COSMIIC System Clinical Trial

The COSMIIC System is being used in a multi-center clinical trial over 2023 to 2026, aiming to test and validate the sensing and control algorithms embedded in the COSMIIC platform to deliver Hand-Grasp functionality to individuals with spinal cord injury.

This system represents a full-featured neuro-prostheticdevice already used in human studies under an Early Feasibility Study Investigational Device Exemption from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Regulatory documents, test procedures, test results, and FDA interaction records are shared with researchers as part of COSMIIC's open source commitment to help researchers navigate the IDE approval process.

Upcoming Modules and Devices

New implantable remote modules and external wireless devices will expand available tools for human research in neuromodulation and neuroprosthetics.

Nova

High channel recording and stimulating module

  • Uses Intan RHD2164 bio amplifier and 32-bit microcontroller for low power, low noise streaming of 64-channels spiking band power transmitted every 32ms
  • Spiking band power captures spiking activity with 2KSps sampling, 300Hz high pass filter, rectified and averaged over 32ms time bins
  • Firmware includes single unit mode streams via selected channels sampled at 30KSps to view single unit waveforms and closed-loop modulation example with programmable stimulation frequency, pulse width and amplitude
  • 32-channel stimulation and recording version built with circuitry designed around two Intan RHS2116 bio amplifiers and stimulators, and 32-bit microcontroller
  • Charge-balanced stimulation up to 2.5 mA over 14V range (±7V)

Fusion

Remotely powered sensor module

  • Module includes Network Data Interface to relay sensor information back to network
  • Microcontroller selects communication and power pathways and processes data from outlying sensor
  • Auxiliary Sensors consisting of 9-axis IMU and temperature sensor
  • Programmable switching between sensor communication protocols
  • Current monitoring detects failure conditions

Gamma

Electrical nerve conduction block module

  • Delivers kilohertz frequency alternating current (KHFAC) for reversible electrical nerve block
  • Voltage- or current-controlled charge-balanced waveforms up to 20 kHz
  • Enables both up-regulation and down-regulation of the nervous system within a single implanted system
  • Allows precise tuning of waveform parameters to optimize therapeutic effect
  • Integrates nerve block with electrical stimulation for greater autonomy and control
